One of the biggest fears I hear from couples is, “We’re awkward in front of the camera.” If that’s you, don’t worry—you’re not alone. My goal as your Newcastle wedding photographer is to make sure you don’t feel like you’re on a film set.

Start with Light, Not the Clock: Planning Your Wedding Timeline

Many couples start their timeline by picking a ceremony time (like 3:00 PM) and working forward. However, to get those dreamy, soft-lit portraits, I always recommend working backwards from the sunset.

In the Hunter Valley and Newcastle, light behaves differently depending on the season. Because of the surrounding hills in the Valley, the sun often “drops” earlier than you’d expect, meaning that “5:00 PM sunset” might actually lose its usable light by 4:30 PM.

The Golden Hour Window

We photographers obsess over the Golden Hour—the 60 minutes before the sun dips below the horizon. This is when the light is warmest and most flattering, minimizing harsh shadows and giving your skin that natural, organic glow.

Summer Weddings:
Sunset can be as late as 8:00 PM. We might duck out of your reception for 15 minutes between courses to catch that last bit of magic.

Winter Weddings:
The sun can vanish by 4:30 PM. For these, I recommend a ceremony no later than 2:00 PM to ensure we have enough daylight for family photos and your portraits.

Pro Tip: Build in a Buffer

Weddings rarely run perfectly to the minute. Whether it’s a chatty relative or a slight delay in transport, adding a 15-minute “buffer” between your ceremony and portraits ensures you stay relaxed. Remember, the goal is for you to be present, not rushing to beat the sun.
